Over the forty years of his creative life Fyffe William George Christie produced a huge number of paintings and drawings of wonderful quality and of many types, each fully represented in this retrospective volume assembled by his widow, Eleanor. The high-quality colour and black-and-white reproductions, a biography by David Buckman and two appreciative articles, by Robert Radford the artist and critic and Ludmilla Jordanova the cultural historian and writer, provide a full account of the painter's oeuvre and his dedication and skill.
Christie was born in Hertfordshire, the son of a Scottish illustrator and an English mother who died when he was twelve. The family then moved back to Glasgow where his only brother also died. Fyffe was a quiet introverted boy, good-natured and humorous but modest and reserved. He eventually became in succession a solicitor's clerk and a lithographic draughtsman, and then in 1944 as a piper in the 9th battalion of the Cameronians was involved in stretchering the heavy casualties of the north European battlefields, an experience he never afterwards spoke of. He had already developed a good drawing technique and made many sketches of the quieter side of army life, most of which are now in military museums. After the war he attended Glasgow School of Art specialising in mural painting and some of his large murals are still in existence.
Many of his other works are now in galleries throughout the UK. They include still-life paintings, atmospheric landscapes and large figure compositions in oils, life-drawings and paintings, and portraits (done quickly in breaks or lunchtimes) of the children he taught in schools after moving back to London. His works all reflect a studied and compassionate attention, wonderfully colourful and masterful, to the natures of landscape and humanity.
