Thomas Watson, Latin Poems
Transcribed from original prints and with an English version by Albert Chatterley
Book cover
Thomas Watson was one of the most skilful and dedicated Latinists of the late years of the sixteenth century, and this book presents all his Latin poetry accompanied on each page by a readable translation into English verse, the first to be published in England. Included are his two epic love-stories Amyntas and Amintae Gaudia, the additions which he wrote specially for a performing edition of Sophocles' Antigone, and some smaller poems. Each work is provided with line-by-line notes, and there is an editorial introduction which discusses the works and the poet's methods.

In his Latin epics Watson created a personal universe occupied by his chief characters the shepherd and shepherdess Phyllis and Amyntas, whose difficult courtship and blissful marriage is elegantly and searchingly explored until Phyllis's untimely death, and his eleven days of mourning and eventual suicide. He covers a wide-ranging selection of topics including many of the more confusing aspects of love with reference to many themes from Ovid and Propertius. His Antigone was the first Greek tragedy to be printed in England in a Latin version, and drew much commendation from his contemporaries. Watson's additions seemed designed to provoke discussion of legal points and this play was probably performed in the Inns of Court. Full-page reproductions of the original title-pages and an index of names to both volumes is included.

About the author: Albert Chatterley has also edited Thomas Watson: English Poems and Italian Madrigals Englished (Musica Britannica vol. 74), thus covering Watson's complete poetry. He has also written extensively on this and associated topics in scholarly journals.
