The Slog Smugglers
George Barker
'Slogs' were, and are, the thick slices of bread and margarine served in Steyning Grammar School at breakfast and tea. The Slog Smugglers recalls life as a boarder at the school during the 1950s. It combines accurate description with a rich mixture of anecdotes and illustrations which catch the spirit and mood of the times.
Successive chapters describe the staff, school buildings and the surrounding town and Sussex countryside. Standards of behaviour, in-school and out-of-school activities are recalled from the perspective of a schoolboy of that time.
These personal reminiscences explore something of the school's philosophy as well as showing the author's genuine affection for the place, its staff and fellow students. It will be of greatest interest to those who were boarders there during the period described, but this will resonate with anyone at school, and particularly at boarding school, in the fifteen or twenty years following the second world war.
