The People of the New Covenant
Dorothy M. Daldy
Book cover
This book is a profound account of what human life vis-a-vis God and each other ought to be. Central places go to the biblical concept of covenant, and to the related topic of the reciprocity and mutual responsibilities of friendship, which is given a new fullness and richness of meaning. New light is shed on such matters as prayer and reconciliation and much else besides. It is aimed at anyone willing to think constructively and with an open mind about the basis and aims of a Christian life, and more generally about how human lives can best be lived.

Dorothy Daldy was born in 1903. After a distinguished and pioneering career teaching psychology, education and theology in colleges and universities, she retired to Dorset. She was the first woman to become an Anglican Reader in the Diocese of Bath and Wells (1972). In 1973 she founded the Ecumenical Teaching Order, and served for ten years as its Warden. Until very recently she was a leading figure in the local ecumenical movement, where her radical views brought her into conflict, not for the first time, with the ecclesiastical authorities.

The motto of the Ecumenical Teaching Order is ‘Faith seeking Understanding’, and it catches perfectly the spirit of her life. She lost her inherited faith when young, and regained it only in the 1950’s, when dedicated, critical study of the basis of Christianity finally convinced her of its rational credentials. Her aim, ever since, has been to enable others to discover for themselves what Christianity could be, once fresh critical thought has stripped away its centuries of accumulated misunderstandings, irrelevances and abuses of authority. The People of the New Covenant, the fruits of decades of reflection, seeks above all to inspire in all people of good will a new enthusiasm for enquiry into who we are and how we should live.
